Ask The Experts About Train New Puppy Alone

Maria asks…
i have to go to school august 10th, and my new puppy will be alone from 8 to 3. What should i do?(revised)?
Okay, i already asked this question, but i’ll make it more clear XD My basset hound puppy (6 weeks) is very attached to me, but soom i’ll have to go back to school and leave her alone. i can’t stand ger whining and crying when i leave her alone. I cannot leave her outside b/c the roofing ppl screwed up my gate (which is why my previous dog is gone and why i have this new basset) and the heat here is unbearable. i know i have to leave her in her crate but it’s only temporarily until our gate is fixed and/or when she’s potty trained. any suggestions? she has toys.
Firstly, haters, i did not buy this puppy. i was given this puppy by desperate roofing people who did not want to get sued.
Secondly, i am doing my very best to take care of this dog. I am not rich, so i can’t hire anyone to look out for her, but my grandmother could check on her around noon.
Thirdly, i can’t take her back to her mother because the mother lives 7 hours from my house. i simply cannot ask my mother to drive me that far. Thanks for understanding, and please give me some advice i can use.

I was in a similar situation as yours when I first got my puppy six years ago.
Being that its a puppy I highly suggest that you set up a potty routine, for example, take the dog out one last time before you leave for school and immediatly when you get home. If possible while you are still home during the day star the routine now, but still take her out durning the day. As she gets older she will get use to not needing to pee while you are gone hopfully. My six year old dog does fine while my family and I are at work and school during the day.
Lastly, I HIGHLY suggest you wear an old t shirt of yours for a day with no perfume and perferably no deoderant, and leave it in the dogs bed (Hopfully not in the cage becuase 7 hours in a cage is not good). Leaving the shirt in the cage will help the dog with fear and separation anxiety. The dog will pick up your scent from the shirt and will find it comforting.
I also suggest not leaving her in the cage all day while you are gone, instead leave it in a room, maybe the kitchen or living room and just block off the door ways with dog gates.
I did both of these things with my dogs when i got him as a puppy and eventually wel let him to roam the enitre first floor whenever we are gone and he was fine, no peeing or chewing.
If you have any issues with chewing the furniture leave a dog bone to occupy the dog. But I first suggest you watch the dog with the bone to see if she chews it in pieces becuase if she does it can be hazardous and she might choke. But if the bone stays intact she should be fine on her own with a bone.
Good Luck!
