Ask The Experts About Puppy Training Videos

Mandy asks…

Are puppy training classes really worth it?

At $80 to $100 dollars per 6 to 8 week class (and on a college student budget) puppy training in my area is not cheap. I was told by my vet to seek a training class for my 18 week old puppy who is very easily distracted, have problems walking on a leach, and runs off every chance she gets. With this being my first dog I’m seriously considering it, being that I have no previous “dog experience”. I would like to know are these classes worth the money or am I better of getting some books/ looking at videos and doing the training myself ?
She is a small dog, a toy poodle at about 7 lbs
The price is also per 6 to 8 week class(a total of 6 to 8 one hour classes) sessions NOT per day/class

That is a very reasonable price actually. Since this is your first dog, I highly recommend it because sometimes the books aren’t really helpful. You may read something and not understand what you are supposed to do, but if it was shown to you by an instructor then you would understand it. I personally think private sessions are better though, but they are more expensive. Before you go spending all your money on this trainer though, I would do some research. Ask questions, get some opinions from people who have went to that training school or are enrolled right now. Observe a class if you are allowed to. Make sure its a good trainer before you spend all your money!
