Ask The Experts About Puppy Training Video Biting

Richard asks…
Leash Training my Puppy?
I just adopted an 8 week old puppy from the humane society about a week ago and we’ve been having some real success with her. She’s been crying less in the crate at nights and when we leave and she’s done pretty good at going potty outside so far. We’ve even got her to go up and down stairs and through doors which she wouldn’t do the first couple of days. Now obviously, I’ve had her on the leash to take her out and she’s not biting at the leash or scratching at the harness anymore. We live on the second floor of an apartment building, and now as soon as we get to the bottom of the stairs when we go out to take care of her business, she just stops and pulls. I’ve been watching videos of how to stop your dog from pulling, but the only address when the dog is pulling ahead of you. She pulls from behind and we have to pretty much drag her into the grass, but as soon as she’s in the grass she’ll go potty. If we decide to go for a longer walk, she’ll usually stop pulling once we get past where she usually goes potty, and then she’ll run with me or walk with me pretty well. She’ll do fine on the way back as we walk back toward the apartment, but if I try to take her past the entrance in the other direction, she begins to pull back again and I’ve got to drag her. Should I just try getting her to come to me with treats, or is there another way I can get her to walk with me?

admin answers:
Yep treats works for me as she needs to be distracted and focus on something else other than that spot she does not like.
Sounds like you are doing great on training though – she does so many things so well at the moment.
Congratulations and Good Luck

Mary asks…
Preparing for new puppy, training and diet questions!?
The time has finally come that I can get my first dog! I’ve reserved a male golden retriever from a litter, and I will be bringing him home on August 2nd. I’ve always wanted one, I’m REALLY excited! I’ve been preparing for this for years, reading all kinds of training and care techniques. I feel like I’m as prepared as I can be. However, now that the day is finally approaching, I’m beginning to doubt myself. I think all new parents, whether the baby is human or animal, go through this? I have 2 main questions. The first is, I’m seriously considering feeding him a “natural” diet that I will make at home, I’ve heard too many bad things about commercial food. Please follow the link and tell me if this will work well(provided I nutritionally balance it, which I will!). Does anyone have experience with it? Secondly, he will be 8 weeks old when I get him, and I will start training right away. Should I train one specific thing at a time, like housetraining, then leash training, then sit, etc-
and wait until it has been mastered, or can you train several things at once? Especially for leash training… should I teach him leash manners, then teach him to sit, then teach him to “automatic sit” when I stop walking, seperately, or can I train the leash manners and automatic sit at the same time? It’s confusing I know lol. Here’s the link for the diet: http://www.crvetcenter.com/homefood.htm
All advice is much appreciated! Thanks!
Thanks for the extensive answers guys! I’ve pretty much figured out my training methods. For example, I’m definitely crate training him to teach house-training. I also believe in understanding the dog’s behaviour and reacting accordingly, in a non-physical way. For example, to teach not to bark, I know that they bark to get attention. So, when he barks, I will ignore him, then praise him like mad when he stops! I just wasn’t sure if you could teach more than one thing at once. And the diet thing is still up in the air too. I’m hovering between using the method on the link, or going with raw feeding. I don’t know much about raw feeding though, and how do you make sure it’s nutritionally balanced? Anyone with experience let me know, thanks!

I am still learning the in’s and outs of training myself I say try a few things at a time and if it seems she picks up on them add more but potty training can be included with all the other training and will be an on going thing.
I looked at the diet site and didn’t like it for myself because I do believe that dogs need very little carbs all of which can be obtained with fruits and veggies they don’t need grains. Do I think grains will kill them not really. Dogs are surviving on extreme junk food that would probably give each one of us a million health problems. I prefer a species appropriate (raw) diet but again that is me. If you feed your dog the diet on that website he is way far ahead of millions of dogs being fed commercial dog food and he will be fine as long as you learn how to supplement.
Raw feeding is much easier to balance I don’t do BARF I just feed raw meaty bones (like complete bone in chicken leg quarters) and every other day they get a preground buffalo grind (primal is the brand) that has organ meat bone and of course buffalo meat. The little one gets some veggies and fruits because she likes them but they are more like a snack. I put a few raw eggs a week in again the little one will eat the shells not the big one. You need to make sure you get enough organ meat in but I found for my big dog the beef liver is too rich so I am going to try chicken liver. Also if you want to go with the barf diet then you can look it up there are many sites and books to help you with that and raw feeding. I am still working things out with the extras but I also give them a good multivitiman to help where I may be a little lacking. In a raw diet balance is achieverd over time just like in a realistic human diet.
